Bishops Gather Across Empire to Settle Arius Controversy
Bishops, priests, and deacons have travelled from every corner of the Roman Empire to the lakeside city of Nicaea, answering Emperor Constantine’s call to resolve a theological dispute that has spread from Alexandria to nearly every province.
The controversy centres on the teachings of the Alexandrian presbyter Arius, whose preaching concerning the Son of God has divided clergy and faithful alike. More than two hundred bishops have answered the summons — among them confessors who still bear the scars of the persecutions under Diocletian.
Never before has the Christian Church witnessed a gathering quite like this one.
His supporters argue that this teaching preserves the uniqueness of God. His opponents insist that it undermines the very salvation proclaimed by the Gospel.
The question has become so contentious that congregations throughout the Empire have found themselves divided. Reports from Alexandria describe heated disputes among clergy and laypeople alike, while neighboring provinces have struggled to maintain peace amid conflicting teachings.
