Editorial Standards

Cloud of Witnesses is a living historical reference project dedicated to documenting the saints, righteous figures, and history of the Orthodox Church. Because this collection spans more than two thousand years and thousands of individuals across many cultures and languages, our work is an ongoing process of research, verification, and refinement.

We are committed to presenting information that is accurate, transparent, and responsibly sourced while recognizing that historical research is never truly finished.

Every page on Cloud of Witnesses is guided by the following principles:

Historical Accuracy

We strive to present information that reflects the best available historical and ecclesiastical evidence. When historical facts are uncertain, disputed, or preserved through multiple traditions, we seek to explain those differences rather than presenting speculation as certainty.

Faithful Representation

Cloud of Witnesses is an educational reference resource rooted in the life and history of the Orthodox Church. We aim to represent Orthodox tradition fairly and accurately while clearly distinguishing between:

• Canonical Scripture
• Holy Tradition
• Liturgical tradition
• Ancient historical sources
• Later local traditions
• Modern historical scholarship

Where appropriate, we identify the origin of particular accounts so readers can better understand their historical context.

Transparency

No historical reference work is ever completely finished. As new sources become available, historical questions are revisited, or corrections are submitted, pages may be updated to reflect improved scholarship.

We believe transparency strengthens trust. Rather than hiding our editorial process, we want readers to understand how information is researched, reviewed, and improved over time.

The Verified Mark

Profiles marked with a dove have completed our current editorial review process — our highest current editorial standard.

Verification typically includes reviewing and confirming, where applicable:

• Identity and historical distinctions
• Names and alternative spellings
• Feast day(s)
• Dates and chronology
• Geographic information
• Biography
• Family relationships
• Companions and contemporaries
• Related saints
• Patronages and areas of association
• Bibliography and recommended reading
• Sources and citations
• Images and licensing information
• Internal cross-references throughout the database

A verified profile represents our highest current editorial standard.

Profiles without the dove are still valuable references and are generally reliable, but they may continue to receive expanded research, additional sources, corrected relationships, improved biographies, or other editorial enhancements as our review progresses.

Whenever possible, our research draws from a combination of:

• Orthodox synaxaria and liturgical texts
• Official Orthodox Church jurisdictions and publications
• Patristic writings
• Ancient historical sources
• Modern academic scholarship
• Published biographies
• Primary historical documents
• Museum, library, and archival collections

When using sources outside the Orthodox tradition, we evaluate them critically and use them primarily to provide historical context rather than theological interpretation.

Cloud of Witnesses seeks to use public-domain images, freely licensed works, or images used with the permission of the copyright holder.

We are grateful to the iconographers, photographers, publishers, monasteries, parishes, and organizations that generously allow their work to be featured. All images are credited whenever possible, and we are committed to honoring licensing agreements and correcting attribution if needed.

Orthodox history is remarkably rich, and no single editorial team can uncover every manuscript, local tradition, parish history, or historical publication.

If you notice an error, have additional historical information, know of a reliable source, possess photographs or icons that may be shared, or would like to recommend corrections or improvements, we warmly invite you to contact us.

Likewise, if there is a saint, event, or topic you would like us to prioritize for future research and expansion, we are happy to receive suggestions.

Thoughtful contributions help strengthen the project for everyone. When significant contributions are incorporated into the database, contributors may be acknowledged on the relevant page with their permission.

Cloud of Witnesses is built with the understanding that careful scholarship and humility belong together.

Our goal is not simply to collect information, but to preserve it responsibly, present it clearly, and continually improve it. Every correction, newly discovered source, expanded biography, translated text, and historical connection brings us one step closer to creating a resource that faithfully reflects the richness of the Orthodox Christian tradition.
