Our Mission

The Orthodox Church has preserved the memory of thousands of saints across two millennia and every inhabited continent. Their lives are found in Scripture, liturgical texts, synaxaria, historical chronicles, local traditions, scholarly publications, and countless parish communities. While many excellent resources exist, this information is often scattered across books, websites, and languages, making it difficult for English-speaking readers to explore the Church’s rich history in one place.

Our mission is to build a comprehensive, historically grounded, and easy-to-use reference database that helps people discover the men and women who have shaped the life of the Orthodox Church.

Whether you are:

• learning about Orthodoxy for the first time,
• preparing for baptism or chrismation,
• choosing a patron saint,
• researching Church history,
• teaching in a parish or classroom,
• looking for saints connected to your profession, struggles, or interests,
• or simply exploring the great cloud of witnesses,

we hope Cloud of Witnesses becomes a helpful companion on that journey.

Cloud of Witnesses is more than a collection of saint biographies. Our long-term vision is to create an interconnected reference library that allows visitors to explore the history of the Church through its people, places, events, and traditions.

Our growing collection includes:

As the project continues to grow, new educational features and research tools will be added to help readers better understand the history and life of the Orthodox Church.

We strive to present information that is historically responsible, clearly sourced, and faithful to the Orthodox tradition. When historical details are uncertain or multiple traditions exist, we aim to present those differences honestly rather than oversimplifying them.

Cloud of Witnesses is a living reference project. New research, corrections, translations, images, and historical sources are continually incorporated as our editorial review progresses.

We believe that transparency, careful scholarship, and humility are essential to building a resource that will serve the Church for years to come.

Orthodox Christianity is wonderfully diverse, encompassing countless local traditions, languages, and histories. No single team can uncover every manuscript, local history, photograph, or historical source.

We welcome thoughtful contributions from clergy, scholars, translators, historians, iconographers, photographers, parish communities, and anyone with reliable information that can help improve the database.

If you notice an error, know of an additional source, or would like to see a particular saint expanded, we would be delighted to hear from you. Contributors whose work becomes part of the project may be acknowledged on the relevant pages, with their permission.

Above all, we hope Cloud of Witnesses helps people discover the remarkable men and women who have faithfully followed Christ throughout the centuries.
