The Holy New Martyr Demetrius of Sliven
Life
Demetrius of Sliven was a Bulgarian new martyr of the nineteenth century, put to death by the Ottoman Turks for confessing Christ. He is commemorated on January 30.
By the accounts he was born on October 9, 1818, in the town of Sliven in Bulgaria, the younger of two sons of parents who had been childless for the first eight years of their marriage, and he was raised in piety. By the tradition he was martyred by the Turks while holding fast to the Christian faith.
