Life

Martyr Niketas the Dacian is commemorated in the Orthodox synaxarion on June 22, among a cluster of saints connected with the Danubian and Romanian lands. He is identified by the epithet "the Dacian," associating him with the region of ancient Dacia, corresponding broadly to present-day Romania.

Almost nothing of his life is preserved. The Orthodox Church in America records for his entry only that no information on the life of this saint is available, and he survives as little more than a name and a feast day within the calendar. He should not be confused with the Hieromartyr Niketas of Remesiana, who is commemorated on the same day, nor with the Great Martyr Nicetas the Goth, whose feast falls on September 15.

KontakionTone 2

(Podoben: “You sought the heights...”) You appeared as a bright star announcing Christ with your radiance,
which is repulsive to this world, O Martyr Niketas;
extinguishing the allure of false gods,
you enlighten the faithful,
always interceding for us all.

TroparionTone 3

Your holy martyr Niketas, O Lord,
through his sufferings has received an incorruptible crown from You, our God.
For having Your strength, he laid low his adversaries,
and shattered the powerless boldness of demons.
Through his intercessions, save our souls!

Sources and the Limits of the Record

The principal witness to this martyr is the liturgical calendar itself. The synaxarion preserves his name, his rank as a martyr, his epithet "the Dacian," and his commemoration on June 22, but no narrative of his birth, the circumstances of his death, or any relics or shrines associated with him. The Orthodox Church in America states plainly that no account of his life is currently available.

Because he appears on the same date as the Hieromartyr Niketas of Remesiana and shares a name and Danubian setting with the Great Martyr Nicetas the Goth, care is needed not to merge the three distinct commemorations. In the absence of a surviving passion or vita, Niketas the Dacian is best regarded as an honest entry awaiting further scholarly and ecclesial confirmation.
