Our Venerable Father Nestor, Ascetic of the Far Caves of Kiev

Life

Venerable Nestor of the Far Kiev Caves was a monastic ascetic of the Kiev Caves monastery (the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra), numbered among the saints whose relics repose in the Far Caves of Saint Theodosius. He is commemorated on October 27, a date apparently assigned because he bore the name of the Martyr Nestor of Thessalonica, who is celebrated the same day.

He is explicitly distinguished in the tradition from his more famous namesake, Nestor the Chronicler, whose relics rest in the Near Caves. Byzantine-era Kievan sources preserve no dates for his birth or repose and no detailed vita; what is known of him comes chiefly from the liturgical services for the Fathers of the Far Caves.

TroparionTone 8

By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile,
and your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance.
By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe!
O our holy father Nestor, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!

Identity and Distinction from the Chronicler

The Orthodox tradition takes care to separate this Nestor from Saint Nestor the Chronicler, the monk credited with the Kievan chronicle tradition. The Chronicler, who reposed around 1114, is associated with the Near Caves of the Kiev monastery, while this Nestor lived as an ascetic in the Far Caves. The OCA listing names him directly as 'Saint Nestor (not the Chronicler) of the Far Kiev Caves' to prevent the two from being conflated.

Beyond this distinction, no independent biography survives. He has no dedicated encyclopedia article, and the repeated destruction of the Kiev Caves complex over the centuries likely accounts for the loss of any detailed account of his life.

Liturgical Commemoration

Nestor is commemorated on October 27, the feast he shares with the Martyr Nestor of Thessalonica, his name-patron. He is also remembered on August 28, the Synaxis of the Holy Fathers of the Kiev Caves whose relics repose in the Far Caves of Saint Theodosius, and on the Second Sunday of Great Lent.

The General Service for the Monastics of the Far Caves preserves the few characterizations attached to him. It relates that he received divine instruction 'not by written wisdom... but from on high,' and liturgical tradition further credits him with receiving angelic prayers and with foreknowing the time of his own death.

The Far Caves of Kiev

The Far Caves, part of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, trace their origin to the cave that Saint Anthony first settled near Berestovo around 1051. When Anthony moved to a new cave in 1057, his original dwelling became known as the Far Caves; Saint Theodosius was buried there upon his death in 1074, and the caves bear his name.

The relics of many monks of the caves were solemnly glorified in 1643 under Metropolitan Peter Mohyla. The monastery endured repeated devastation across its history, including Cuman raids, the Mongol sack of 1240, and later burnings, before being disbanded and eventually reopened in the twentieth century.
