TroparionTone 4

In truth you were revealed to your flock as a rule of faith,
an image of humility and a teacher of abstinence;
your humility exalted you;
your poverty enriched you.
Hierarch Father Alexander,
entreat Christ our God
that our souls may be saved.

Education and Monastic Formation

Alexander received his early education at the Gori Theological School and then at the Tbilisi Seminary, completing his studies in 1845. He was tonsured a monk at the Tbilisi Monastery of the Transfiguration, where he took the name Alexander in place of his baptismal name Alexei.

He then pursued advanced studies at the Kazan Academy in Russia, graduating with honors before returning to Georgia. As a hieromonk he taught at the Tbilisi Seminary, lecturing in Holy Scriptures, Latin, moral theology, and archaeology until July 1851.

Episcopal Ministry

On September 21, 1851, Alexander became dean of the theological school in Abkhazeti, where his missionary and educational labors earned him recognition as the 'Second Apostle to Abkhazeti.' He was elevated to archimandrite on February 29, 1856, and consecrated bishop on March 4, 1862.

In 1898 he was appointed Bishop of Guria and Samegrelo, the see with which his name is chiefly associated, serving until his retirement in 1903.

Contributions and Legacy

Alexander's ministry centered on the revitalization of Georgian Christianity. He restored churches and monasteries, including Shio-Mgvime, Zedazeni, Davit-Gareji, and Shemokmedi, with sources also crediting him with the restoration of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.

He was a persistent advocate for the Georgian language in worship and education. In 1878 he sponsored a diocesan school for women in Tbilisi, and he published spiritual and historical books, textbooks, and collections of hymns.

He was a spiritual father of St. Ilia the Righteous (Ilia Chavchavadze) and attended his burial on September 9, 1907, shortly before his own repose.
