Marcian the Emperor

A soldier of Thracian origin who in 450 married the Augusta Pulcheria and became Eastern Roman Emperor. With her he convened the Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon in 451, which upheld the Orthodox confession of Christ against the Monophysite error, and defended the Church until his repose in 457.
