Dymphna was a young Christian princess of Ireland who, fleeing the mad designs of her pagan father, took refuge at Gheel in the Low Countries, where she was pursued and beheaded for her faith and purity. She is honored as a martyr and is widely invoked as the patroness of those afflicted with mental and nervous illness.
