Angel of the Lord

Also known as: The Angel of the Lord, Angel of Yahweh, Malakh YHWH, Messenger of the Lord, Angel of God

A biblical title — “the Messenger of the LORD” (Malakh YHWH) — for the heavenly figure who appears to Hagar, Abraham, Moses, Gideon, and others across the Old Testament, often speaking with the very voice and authority of God. Many Church Fathers understood certain of these appearances as manifestations of the pre-incarnate Word of God, the Son before His Incarnation, though Scripture itself does not state this explicitly.
