Archimandrite Roman Braga

Romanian-American confessor and elder
Not yet glorified — held in the living memory of the faithful. This servant of God is remembered with love and gratitude, but is not (or not yet) formally glorified by the Church. No feast, liturgical veneration, or intercession is implied here; what follows is an historical profile, subject to clergy and source review.

Overview

Father Roman Braga was born on April 2, 1922, in Condrița, in Bessarabia, and entered monastic formation in Romania while still young, receiving his monastic and theological schooling there through the 1930s.

Under the Romanian communist regime he was imprisoned and endured years of suffering, including a period of solitary confinement. He often recounted that it was precisely in his cell that he discovered an inner freedom and joy no captivity could take from him — an experience that shaped the confessor and spiritual father he would become.

After emigrating to North America he served especially within the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate and settled at the Holy Dormition Monastery in Rives Junction, Michigan, where he was widely sought as an elder. Shortly before his death the Orthodox Church in America awarded him the Order of Saint Romanos for his service. He reposed at the monastery on April 28, 2015.
